William W. Field and Frederick C. Cross, Jr., graduated from Yale University in 1940. Dorothea and Alexander Leighton, Cross's sister and brother-in-law, both physicians and anthropologists from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, invited Field and Cross to spend the summer of 1940 with them in Gambell, Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska, where they were studying Eskimo culture.
