Typescript describing Field's experiences in Gambell, Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska, during 1940 Jul-Aug. Most of the text is excerpted from his diary and from interviews of Eskimos regarding their lives and customs conducted by Field, Cross, and Dorothea and Alexander Leighton. Plates include photographs of sketches drawn by Eskimos and photographs taken by Field in 1940.

William W. Field and Frederick C. Cross, Jr., graduated from Yale University in 1940. Dorothea and Alexander Leighton, Cross's sister and brother-in-law, both physicians and anthropologists from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, invited Field and Cross to spend the summer of 1940 with them in Gambell, Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska, where they were studying Eskimo culture. Physicians who researched Navajo life and problems. Both born in 1908, Dorothea C. and Alexander H. Leighton received their M.D.s from Johns Hopkins University in 1936.
